A high-resolution photo can be larger than an email service allows, even when the image itself is not especially long or complex.

Know the attachment limit
Check the email provider's current limit before preparing files. The encoded email attachment can be larger than the file on disk, so leave room under the published limit.
If the recipient needs to print or edit the photo, ask what dimensions and format they actually need before compressing it.
Create an email-friendly copy
Make a duplicate, choose a balanced quality setting and reduce dimensions if the photo is much larger than the recipient needs. A 1200 to 2000 pixel long edge is often easier to email than a full camera original, depending on use.
Compress your images before attaching them, then reopen the result to ensure it still has the detail you intend to share.
Send a sensible bundle
For several images, batch compression keeps the workflow consistent. Downloading a ZIP can make it easier to keep the files together where the recipient can accept archives.
Keep the originals outside the email folder so a smaller delivery copy does not replace your archive.
